Kristi and daughter Samantha at "Reggae and Brew" at the Baltimore Zoo, September 15, 2007

August 2006

Well, as some of you might recall me saying, I was feeling a bit burnt out with the teaching and was dreaming of the ideal job 3-4 days a week, low stress. So after getting no response what so ever from all the real jobs I had applied for (mostly administrative in the area colleges), I sent my resume out to the Baltimore Zoo.

I am now the new (part time) Coordinator of Group and Event Volunteers for The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore!

I get paid peanuts - really - and I have to fight the elephants for even that much.  But hell, it’s fun. Yesterday, I spent a good 5 minutes in a staring contest with a mean looking prairie dog and got a behind-the-scene look at our prized penguins.  Not such a bad day.

Tomorrow I get trained on the golf cart and create our new event volunteers website. I work three days a week and maybe every other Saturday or Sunday or basically what ever hours I write myself in for-30 max a week.

So far, it’s interesting, new and exciting.  At some point I’ll need to go back to work and earn some actual money but for now it’s exactly what I was asking for (expect the money part).  I still can’t believe I actually resigned from my teaching position.  I’d been bitching about it for so long even I was getting bored with my rants.  Yesterday, would have been my first day back for the school year- I really don’t miss it.  Just some of my co-workers.

Well, I definitely feel empowered- a feeling that I’ve been missing for a long time.  So here’s to new challenges, new beginnings!

Hope all are enjoying these last few days of summer, I know I am!
