Teacher
Jonna Shutowick Named Palm Beach County Social Science Teacher Of The
Year
Jonna Shutowick, a Social Science
teacher at Boca High was named Palm Beach County Social Science teacher
of the year. "Jonna Shutowick is empathetic, energetic, inspiring,
courageous, versatile, and devoted. She has pioneered new curricula, led
learning teams, and conquered every challenge with pure excellence,"
said Dr. Geoff Mckee, Principal at Boca Raton High.
Thankfully, Ms. Shutowick accepted the invitation to lead
the Bobcat Achievement Team of World History teachers assigned to
improving writing skills. Ms. Shutowick motivated, equipped, and guided
these teachers in leading 97% of our students to proficiency. This was
the highest percent of any Palm Beach County high school, including
Dreyfoos and Suncoast, in 2010. Even more impressive, Boca High students
earned 109 perfect sixes, the highest total ever earned in Florida.
Having pioneered the curriculum for a Women's Studies
course, Ms. Shutowick was the first teacher invited to develop our
curriculum for AICE International History. This course had no text book
and had never been taught in our district. Consequently, Ms. Shutowick's
wide-ranging, well-developed skills, and vision have been immensely
valuable. This course is especially important in that it prepares
students for an exam which may determine if the students earn a
prestigious AICE diploma from England's University of Cambridge.
On a personal note, Principal Geoff McKee is especially
grateful that she accepted the challenge of teaching this course for the
sake of all of her students, including Dr. McKee's son, a Boca High
sophomore. Witnessing Ms. Shutowick's work from a father's perspective
has given him a new dimension of appreciation for her spectacular
teaching.
It is fitting that Ms. Shutowick authors the "On
the Bright Side" column in the Happy Herald, as she is a gifted
writer with endless optimism. She is a natural encourager, gracefully
inspiring colleagues and students every day, and a wonderful
representative of Palm Beach County's talented Social Science teachers.
The School District of Palm Beach County recognizes all
efforts that teachers make to become more effective in educating our
student. According to research, teacher effectiveness is the key factor
that impact student achievement.
